What to expect at the massages = Lots of yawns!

When I arrive for the first visit I will talk with you and learn about you and your equine partner. It is very helpful to know what your goals and plans are for the future so a customized plan can be designed!

I will ask questions regarding the horse and health information. Then it will be time for the evaluation. I will perform a hands-on evaluation and then will need to see your horse move out at the walk an trot. This can be done in hand or while being lunged. We will make note if there is any lameness issue that should be addressed by a veterinarian before massaging.

Once this is complete I will be ready to perform the massage session. The initial evaluation and massage usually lasts anywhere from 1- 1.5 hours in duration. The session can be done in the barn aisle, crossties, or anywhere the horse is comfortable.

I usually prefer that the horse is tied for the massage versus the owner holding the horse, simply because this reduces distractions for the horse. And since I do not yet know how the horse will react to the massage points, this keeps the owner safe from sore horsey reactions!

* Please note that the fewer distractions for your horse the better during this time

(i.e. no treats, kisses or petting from other guests if possible). The reasoning behind this is simply that I want your horse to be able to relax completely and I need to be able to see his reactions. Think about when you are at a spa for the day. This is his relaxation time! Also, when I find a sore spot, every horse is different in their reaction and I do not want anyone to get hurt.

Once the session is over it is best for the horse to be walked or turned loose in the paddock. This gives the muscles time to cool down and stretch out. The horse should be given access to fresh water.

  • Plan for at least 1 hour for the first massage as I will be going in depth on your horse's history, doing a thorough evaluation and then the massage

  • Please have the horse groomed and dry before I arrive. This just makes it easier for me to be able to get started right away on the evaluation and/or massage

  • After the first massage, I do not require someone present to hold your horse unless we determine it is in their best interest to do so.  Usually, the best sessions for the horse happen when I am able to work on the horse alone in a quiet environment.

  • I do ask for a 24 hour notice if you are unable to keep your horse's appointment so that I can plan accordingly.

  • Payment needs to be paid upon completion of massage, unless we have worked something out previously. - This is my sole income, so please keep that in mind and try to have your payment with you! I completely understand things happen from time to time.

  • Please let your barn's staff know what date/time I am coming if you will not be there, so that they will be expecting me.

  • If you are unable to be present, please let me know if I can text or email you a copy of your treatment form, or I can leave a copy somewhere that you can find it.

  • It is very helpful if your horse does not have show sheen type products on as it will interfere with my massage work. I do understand however, if I am seeing your horse after a show weekend or at an event.
